Auto sales in India largely held up in March 2026 amid early signs of moderation due to a war in West Asia. Demand for automobiles of all shapes and sizes was broadly strong due to festive tailwinds, a favourable base effect and policy support by way of sustained upside due to GST rate cuts in September last year, according to analysts.
The outlook, however, is turning cautiously optimistic rather than unequivocally bullish. Dealers are witnessing a slight moderation in inquiries, especially from fleet operators, due to external factors such as untimely rains and geopolitical concerns.
“There is no slowdown on the ground as of now…,” industry body Federation of Automobile Dealers Association said. “Demand across passenger vehicles and two-wheelers remains healthy, even as some caution has begun to creep into buyer behaviour.”

Auto sales in March 2026: Tata Motors PV
Total auto sales of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. rose 29% year-on-year to 66,971 units in March 2026, as the demand for electric cars surged against the backdrop of higher crude oil prices.

“Looking ahead, inudstry momentum is expected to sustain, led by the growth in SUVs, CNG and EV,” Shailesh Chandra, chief executive officer at Tata Motors PV, said in a statement. “At the same time, the industry will need to closely monitor geopolitical developments to mitigate potential supply-side risks.”

Auto sales in March 2026: Mahindra Trucks & Buses
Total sales of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.’s CV business grew 13% year-on-year to 4,267 units in March 2026. That includes 2,457 units sold by SML Mahindra Ltd., which grew 6% year-on-year last month.
“Despite geopolitical headwinds, the commercial-vehicle industry has sustained strong momentum, underscoring the sector’s resilience,” Vinod Sahay, president of Mahindra & Mahindra’s CV business, said in an exchange filing on Wednesday.
“Looking ahead, the trajectory for FY27 is mixed — while replacement demand and government-led projects are expected to support volumes, volatility in fuel costs and supply-chain constraints could temper sentiment.”

Total tractor sales of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. rose 29% year-on-year to 45,035 units in March 2026, on the back of festive season demand.

• Tractor exports down 31% YoY at 1,632 units

“A significant part this growth was driven by the full Navratri season falling entirely in March, unlike last year when it was split in March and April,” Veejay Nakra, president (farm equipment business) at Mahindra & Mahindra, said in an exchange filing on Wednesday.

Total auto sales of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. rose 21% year-on-year to 99,969 units in March 2026, even as demand for tractors outpaced that of SUVs in the world’s third largest automotive market.

• India SUV sales up 25% at 60,272 units
• SUV exports down 4% at 3,968 units
• CV sales up 18.15% at 35,729 units
• Total sales up 21% at 99,969 units
“The financial year ended on a very positive note, with Mahindra Auto clocking its highest ever volumes in both SUVs and LCVs — a significant milestone for the company,” said Mahindra Auto CEO Nalinikanth Gollagunta in an exchange filing.
