Maharashtra Political Reshuffle: New Leadership Set to Emerge
Maharashtra is poised for a significant political shift as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prepares to announce the new chief minister following its recent legislative party meeting at Vidhan Bhawan. Devendra Fadnavis, considered the leading candidate for the position, met with caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde at Shinde’s official residence in Mumbai on Tuesday. This interaction, their first since deliberations in Delhi last week, has sparked discussions about the coalition dynamics within the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance.
Reports indicate that Eknath Shinde has agreed to serve as the deputy chief minister in the new government after considerable discussions. Initially hesitant, Shinde’s acceptance of the role reflects the ongoing efforts to finalize a power-sharing arrangement between the BJP, the Shiv Sena, and the NCP faction led by Ajit Pawar. The swearing-in ceremony for this government is set for December 5 at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the high-profile event, alongside approximately 2,000 VVIPs and 40,000 supporters.
Fadnavis’s outreach to Shinde is being viewed from multiple perspectives. Some see it as an effort to consolidate alliances and reassure partners, while others interpret it as groundwork for the upcoming oath-taking ceremony. Meanwhile, the allocation of key portfolios, including the home ministry, has emerged as a point of contention within the coalition. Shiv Sena leaders have reiterated their party’s claim to the home portfolio, citing established norms in alliance politics.
Despite these challenges, the BJP’s remarkable success in the November 20 elections has strengthened its position in the state, with the party securing 132 out of 288 assembly seats—a record performance. However, coalition politics remain complex, with reports suggesting that portfolio distribution among the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP factions may not proceed smoothly. Shinde’s recent health check-up and his visit to his Satara village last week had fueled speculation about his dissatisfaction with the coalition’s direction.
The upcoming ceremony is expected to be a grand affair, with extensive preparations underway. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani have been appointed as central observers for the BJP legislative meeting, underscoring the event’s importance.
