Singh is heard complaining on social media that Banerjee’s “thumka” at the film festival is inappropriate in a video that has gone viral. Several Trinamool Congress (TMC) politicians took offense at his remarks, criticising him for what they saw to be misogyny.
Why is this story important?
The controversy began when the BJP MP said to ABP News this week that it is improper for the chief minister of a state where there is corruption and impoverishment to dance and celebrate.
Prior to this, on Tuesday, the BJP MP posted a video of Banerjee dancing with a number of Bollywood celebrities at the international film festival in Kolkata on X, formerly Twitter.
Moitra attacks Singh, the BJP, and supports Banerjee.
TMC MP Mahua Moitra responded to Singh’s remarks by releasing a video on Wednesday that was critical of the BJP politician. “You will tell Mamata Banerjee what is appropriate and what is not?” Moitra questioned, calling his remarks on the only female chief minister of India “shocking.”
She further said that it is improper to “deprive lakhs and crores of people of Bengal” of their entitlements under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
TMC responds negatively to Singh’s “thumka” comment.
The TMC’s official account, meanwhile, released the video of Singh making the “thumka” comment and chastised him for retracting his earlier remarks.
“This video evidence shows him to not just be uttering the words ‘thunk’ twice but also making gestures that leave no room for misinterpretation,” the party tweeted.
Misogynistic scum @girirajsinghbjp – Would you dare explain what “uchit” is to @MamataOfficial?
You deprive AWAS funding and legitimate MNREGA pay to crores of impoverished people for years, yet your sick and twisted thinking tells our Chief Minister what is “uchit.” Get a real life.
