“Mahua Moitra’s expulsion from Lok Sabha is planned, but this will help her before (the 2024 general) elections,” the Bengal chief minister reportedly said at a Kolkata event.
What is the significance of this story?
The TMC MP faces expulsion from the House in a cash-for-query scandal, based on the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee’s recommendation for violating the House’s standards of conduct.
The argument erupted after BJP MP Nishikant Dubey accused Moitra of collecting money from businessman Darshan Hiranandani to ask questions in Parliament about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Adani Group.
‘If the World Cup had been held in Kolkata, India would have triumphed.’
Banerjee also made an odd claim, suggesting that if the final had been held in Kolkata or Mumbai, Team India would have won the ICC Cricket World Cup.
She was alluding to the Men in Blue’s loss to Australia in the event final on Sunday at Gujarat’s Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.
Attempts are being made to’saffronize’ Indian cricket: Bengal Chief Minister
The Bengal CM told TMC workers at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata that efforts were being made to “saffronize” the nation’s cricket team.
“They [the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)] even attempted to saffronize the team by wearing saffron practise jerseys.” “Because the players resisted, they were not required to wear those jerseys during the matches,” Banerjee added.
Moitra was been assigned a new duty by TMC.
This discovery came just weeks after the TMC selected Moitra as district chief of Krishnanagar (Nadia North), putting to rest any idea that Banerjee’s silence was an admission of guilt on Moitra’s part.
Moitra expressed gratitude to Banerjee for the appointment and promised to “always work with the party for the people of Krishnanagar.”
The move was interpreted as a clear display of solidarity for the TMC MP amid the continuing corruption investigation into the cash-for-query fraud.
