The total number of arrests in the case has gone up to six.
Meanwhile, police are conducting crime scene reconstruction today again.
The male friend of the medical college student, who was gangraped on Friday, was taken to the Place of Occurrence (POA) today again for reconstruction of the crime scene-the forest patch near the private medical college, sources said. Meanwhile, Police today took two accused, already in police remand, to their village in Bijra.
The arrest of Wasef Ali came last night after the survivor, in her statement in front of the judicial magistrate, said in her in-camera statement, that her male friend had molested her when she had stepped out of the campus.
According to sources, no lawyer had reportedly appeared for the accused male friend, Wasef Ali, when he was presented in the Durgapur court.
Meanwhile, the victim’s father has demanded a CBI investigation into the matter to punish the culprits quickly. He also expressed dissatisfaction over the investigation carried out by the Bengal Police.The second-year medical student, who had stepped out of the hospital campus with her male friend on October 10, was identified as Wasef Ali. Ali hails from the Malda district. Police reportedly found inconsistencies in Ali’s statement, after which the arrest was made.Earlier on Tuesday, Ali was taken to the forested area outside the private medical college and hospital to corroborate the claims made by the five accused. The five accused were also taken there by police to reconstruct the crime scene.
Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissioner Sunil Kumar Choudhary on Tuesday evening had said the role of the male friend of the rape survivor is also being investigated.
Choudhary said yesterday, “As per technical and scientific evidence is connected and the statement of victim girl, we have found physical sexual assault has been committed by one person. The involvement of all these five persons are being investigated. The role of the friend of the victim girl, also present at the POA, apart from the other five persons, also under investigation.”
“We have been questioning the friend to find out his involvement. None of the five arrested accused was known to the victim,” CP said. The arrest of Ali, who was detained by police, came hours after CP’s media conference.
“Five accused and victim’s friend’s apparels have been seized. The FSL team has visited the Place of Occurrence (POA). The accused and the victim girl’s friend-were taken to the crime scene today and reconstruction of the crime scene was done. The friend ‘s behaviour is not above doubt,” the CP of Asansol-Durgapur Commissionerate said.
“The technical evidence proved that they were there at the crime spot that day. We were verbally informed at around 1’o o’clock and our mobile van reached there by 1.05AM. We got a written complaint at around 3.38 AM. The POA was guarded from the beginning,” he said. The CP said police were investigating whether the girl and her “friend” were found in a compromising position by the criminals.
The second-year medical student from Odisha was gang-raped by five persons in a forest patch, whic is around a kilometre from the private medical college and hospital in West Burdwan district’s Durgapur, on October 10. Following the complaint lodged by the medical student, the police have arrested all the five accused persons in the case.
The police have conducted DNA tests on five people who were arrested earlier. According to hospital sources, the victim’s condition has improved and she is slowly recovering and is in stable condition.
