Dhaka invites China to 'expand' its economy through the Northeast; area protests.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has lambasted comments made by Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor to Bangladesh’s interim government, that the landlocked Northeast area could provide an opportunity for economic growth.
During his tour to China, Yunus stated, “The seven sisters…They are a landlocked region…” They have no way of reaching the ocean.”
He referred to Bangladesh as the “only guardian of the ocean” in the region, claiming that this may be a big opportunity for China’s expansion into South Asia.

Northeast India’s vulnerability is emphasized by Sarma. The statement has been strongly rejected by Sarma, who described it as “offensive and strongly condemnable.” Sarma reiterated that Yunus’s remarks shed light on the long-held belief that India’s strategic “Chicken’s Neck” corridor is vulnerable. He argued that in the past, even anti-national elements within India have dangerously proposed cutting off this vital corridor to physically separate the Northeast from the mainland. The Chicken’s Neck is a short land route that connects the northeastern states of India to the rest of India.

Connectivity
need for additional routes and improved connectivity Under and around the Chicken’s Neck, Sarma emphasized the urgent need for improved road and railway networks. He advocated for alternative routes that completely avoided this corridor and connected Northeast India to the mainland. Additionally, it should be a top priority to investigate alternative road routes connecting the Northeast to India’s mainland, thereby avoiding the Chicken’s Neck. This may present significant engineering challenges, but it is doable with perseverance and creativity.” .

The Trupira leader says it’s time for India to travel to the ocean.
The Tipra Motha party’s Tripura leader Pradyot Manikya has also responded. He stated the same thing as Sarma: India needs to find a way to get to the ocean. “India’s biggest mistake was to abandon the port in 1947, despite the desire of the hill people who lived there to join the Indian Union…. Keep in mind that Tripura is only a few miles from the port that Yunus is talking about, “he said.

Political reaction Yunus’s statement has sparked concern among Congress Party members.
The Congress party has also voiced concerns regarding Yunus’s statement, describing it as “very dangerous” for Northeast India’s security. Congress’s media and publicity director, Pawan Khera, asserted that the Bangladesh government is providing China with an invitation to encircle India. “China has established a village in Arunachal Pradesh, and the government is not keeping an eye on Manipur. “The country…is now busy trying to surround us,” he stated, “because our foreign policy is in such a deplorable state.”
