Delhi Relaxes Pollution Curbs as Air Quality Improves Amid Rains

Delhi’s air pollution levels have shown improvement following consistent rainfall, leading to a reduction in the air quality index (AQI). On Friday, the Commission for Air Quality Management decided to ease restrictions under stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi and its surrounding regions. Despite the relief, curbs under stage 2 of GRAP remain in force, ensuring continued efforts to manage pollution.

The AQI in Delhi on Friday evening stood at 324, indicating a declining trend in pollution levels. Favorable weather conditions, including rainfall, contributed significantly to this improvement. Forecasts from the India Meteorological Department and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology suggest further enhancements in air quality over the coming days. However, to prevent a relapse into the ‘very poor’ or ‘severe’ AQI categories, authorities continue to implement measures under GRAP’s initial stages.

Under GRAP stage 2, several proactive steps are being taken to control dust and emissions. Roads are being cleaned using mechanized sweepers, and anti-smog guns are deployed for regular sprinkling of water, particularly in areas identified as pollution hotspots. Public advisories through newspapers, television, and radio aim to inform citizens about air quality and encourage eco-friendly practices.

Efforts to minimize diesel generator usage remain in place, with uninterrupted power supply being a key priority. People are also urged to use public transportation instead of personal vehicles to reduce traffic emissions. Additionally, commuters are encouraged to take less congested routes, even if longer, and maintain their vehicles by regularly replacing air filters.

Certain activities continue to be restricted to ensure pollution levels remain under control. The ban on using coal and firewood, including tandoors in restaurants, remains active in Delhi and its neighboring areas. Diesel generator sets are only permitted for emergency or essential services. Furthermore, construction and demolition projects, as well as industrial operations with specific closure orders, are prohibited from resuming work.

The Commission emphasized the importance of public participation in sustaining improved air quality. Citizens are advised to contribute by avoiding activities that may worsen pollution and adopting environmentally conscious practices in their daily routines.

This gradual easing of restrictions marks a significant step toward combating air pollution in Delhi-NCR. Continued vigilance and collaborative efforts between authorities and residents will be crucial to maintaining this positive trajectory in the region’s air quality.
