CM Biren Singh attributes the turmoil in Manipur to the "Free Movement Regime."
The chief minister of Manipur, N Biren Singh, has blasted the past Central governments for ignoring the northeastern state and its worries about the lengthy shared border with Myanmar.
He made reference to the past Congress-led administrations in an oblique manner.
When discussing the violence that has engulfed Manipur since May 2023 with NDTV, Singh asked the Center to abandon the divisive “Free Movement Regime.” The rioting has been attributed to “narco-terrorism” and illegal immigration from Myanmar.

Why is this story important?
The India-Myanmar border stretches approximately 1,650 km through Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh.
The Free Movement Regime (FMR) is an agreement between neighboring countries.
This will allow tribes living along both sides of the border to travel up to 16 miles within the other country without a visa.
Manipur in particular has been rocked for almost eight months by ethnic clashes between the majority Meitai and tribal communities, resulting in nearly 200 deaths.

Mr.singh calls for fencing along Myanmar border “I am not criticizing other central governments, but the government that ruled from 1947 to 1949 (when Manipur merged with India) We are blaming the people who were involved in the attack,” Singh told NDTV.
Pointing out that Manipur shares a 390 km border with Myanmar, he added, “The communities on this side and that side are the same tribe.
” “With the fence and the passport system, there would have been no problems.
“, he claimed.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader alleged that neglect by the previous government led to continued violence between the Maitei and tribal Kukis in the state.

Myanmar border still unguarded: CM Singh Manipur CM did not name anyone specifically, but in a veiled reference to Congress, said that the then central government They left us alone,” he further claimed.
Moreover, Singh claimed that there is still no security other than the Assam Rifles on the Myanmar border.
“But they (Assam Rifles) cannot do both counter-insurgency and border security.
And now we (militants) have camps within our borders,” the CM said.

Mr.Singh’s previous comments on border issues CM Singh emphasized the need to abolish or amend the freedom of movement regime and fence the border with Myanmar as early as September 2023.
You may be reminded of that.
Furthermore, Mr.
Singh pointed out that there are cases in which Myanmar nationals try to take advantage of the FMR policy to illegally enter the northeastern states.
