After more than a week of speculation, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unexpectedly named new MLA Bhajanlal Sharma as the chief minister of Rajasthan on Tuesday.
The declaration was made after a significant gathering of central observers and newly elected party legislators on Tuesday in Jaipur.
Prem Chand Bairwa and Diya Kumari were also selected by the saffron party to be deputy chief ministers.

Why is this story important?
In the most recent assembly elections, the BJP defeated the Congress and returned to power in Rajasthan, gaining 115 seats out of the 200 members of the House. The latter could be a only have 69 seats.
The recent elections in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh were also won by the saffron party. It also selected two newcomers, Mohan Yadav and Vishnu Deo Sai, to be chief ministers of these states.

Further information about the CM-designated Rajasthan Sharma Sharma, 56, is a new member of parliament for Jaipur’s Sanganer Assembly constituency. By a margin of 48,081 votes, he defeated Pushpendra Bhardwauj of the Congress.
Sharma has served as the BJP’s general secretary for the most terms in Rajasthan—four terms.
Unlike the BJP’s new chief ministers of Chhattisgarh and MP, who are from the tribal and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) communities, respectively, he is a member of the upper-caste Brahmin community.

The Jaipur meeting, where the final choice for the chief minister was made, was chaired by newly elected MLAs, senior leaders Vinod Tawde and Saroj Pandya, as well as BJP central observers Rajnath Singh, the minister of defence.
The race also reportedly included two-time chief minister Raje, speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla, union ministers Gajendra Shekhawat and Arjun Meghwal, chief minister of the state CP Joshi, and legislators Diya Kumari and Mahant Balaknath.
