The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) has proposed introducing a pre-open session for index and stock futures in the Equity Derivatives Segment, effective December 8, 2025, following a similar proposal by the BSE on Thursday.

NSE’s announcement follows an earlier exchange circular, aimed at enhancing trading convenience and strengthening risk monitoring in equity derivatives.

In the circular issued to all trading members, NSE stated that changes to the pre-open session in the equity derivatives segment would be made available in a test market environment starting October 04, 2025.

The exchange will also conduct mock sessions before the go-live date to ensure operational readiness.

NSE also clarified that further operational modalities related to the implementation of the pre-open session will be communicated through a separate circular.

This announcement by NSE comes a day after BSE made a similar proposal to introduce a pre-open session in the equity derivatives segment, also starting December 8. BSE had released its update on Thursday, stating that testing in its systems would begin on October 6, 2025, with no changes to the existing ETI API or market data structures required for rollout.BSE added that the same message formats already in use for pre-open sessions in the equity cash segment would be extended to derivatives.BSE had also indicated that it would notify other implementation details in a separate communication and asked its trading members and third-party front-end trading application vendors to initiate necessary changes in their systems.

Both exchanges are acting in response to SEBI’s twin circulars, dated May 29 and June 4, 2025, which directed Indian exchanges to introduce mechanisms aimed at enhancing transparency, improving price discovery, and mitigating risk in the equity derivatives space.

As of now, both exchanges have aligned their proposed launch date for the new functionality to December 8, with their respective testing timelines differing slightly. While BSE begins its simulation environment from October 6, NSE will start two days earlier, from October 4, in its own test environment.
