Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane Apologizes to Dr. Kuttikar, But Stirs Political Storm
In a recent turn of events, Goa’s Health Minister Vishwajit Rane issued a public apology to Dr. Rudresh Kuttikar for the harsh words he used during a recent visit to Goa Medical College (GMC). The incident, which was captured on video and widely circulated online, drew sharp criticism from medical professionals and political opponents alike.
“During the broadcast with Prudent Media last night, I openly extended my heartfelt apology to Dr. Rudresh Kuttikar for the harsh words spoken by me during my visit to GMC,” Rane stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
He further added, “In the heat of the moment, my emotions overtook my expression and I deeply regret the manner in which I addressed the situation.”
Despite the apology, Rane did not shy away from highlighting the repercussions of the standoff. He expressed deep concern about the disruption in medical services at GMC, emphasizing that thousands of innocent patients are being affected.
“The public is bearing the brunt of this situation and I urge all our doctors to reflect on the larger responsibility we share – the welfare of our people,” he said.
However, the minister also noted that the incident had taken a different turn. “The issue is unfortunately being politicized, turning a professional matter into a political confrontation,” Rane remarked.
The controversy has drawn sharp reactions from opposition parties. Congress and AAP leaders have slammed Rane, calling his actions ‘arrogant’ and unbecoming of a public servant.
Acknowledging his misstep, Rane said, “Yes, as Health Minister, I did intervene and I accept that my tone and words could have been more measured.” He also assured the public that “such an approach will not be repeated.”
The backlash began after a viral video showed the minister rebuking Dr. Kuttikar at GMC. In the footage, Rane can be heard saying:
“You learn to control your tongue, you are a doctor… I generally don’t lose my cool, but you have to behave yourself. However loaded, you have to behave properly with patients.”
He further reprimands the doctor, asking him to remove his hands from his pockets, and is seen instructing another official to “generate his suspension order and kick him out. These doctors don’t understand.”
This aggressive behavior triggered a strong response from the Goa branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA). In an official statement, the IMA condemned the minister’s conduct:
“It not only bypasses due process and natural justice but also disregards the professional dignity and morale of the entire medical community,” the statement read. The IMA also demanded that Dr. Kuttikar’s suspension be revoked immediately.
As the controversy continues to unfold, the incident has not only strained the relationship between the medical fraternity and the state government but also raised critical questions about political interference in professional institutions.
