India’s GSAT-N2 Communication Satellite Launched by SpaceX

SpaceX has successfully launched the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) GSAT-N2 communication satellite using its Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. This milestone event, taking place on November 18, 2024, marks a significant collaboration between ISRO and Elon Musk’s SpaceX, paving the way for future commercial projects between the two organizations.

The GSAT-N2 satellite is a high-throughput communication satellite that has been developed by ISRO’s Satellite Centre along with its Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre. Designed to enhance data transmission capabilities, GSAT-N2 offers a bandwidth of 48 Gbps. This increased capacity is expected to strengthen broadband connectivity and improve in-flight communication services across India. The satellite will remain operational for an estimated 14 years.

Equipped with advanced technology, the GSAT-N2 satellite features 32 user beams. It includes eight narrow spot beams that will cover the northeastern region of India, while 24 wide spot beams will span the rest of the country. The satellite’s payload uses Ka-Band high-throughput satellite (HTS) communication technology, making it a critical component of India’s infrastructure improvement initiatives, such as the Smart Cities Mission. The 32 user beams will be supported by hub stations based within the Indian mainland, ensuring efficient connectivity and data transmission capabilities.

Radhakrishnan Durairaj, chairman and managing director of New Space India Limited, the commercial arm of ISRO, highlighted that the satellite has been successfully placed in its intended orbit. This achievement underscores India’s expanding efforts to strengthen its space program through global partnerships.

Traditionally, ISRO relied on Arianespace, a French-based commercial launch service provider, for launching heavier satellites. However, Arianespace currently lacks operational rockets capable of handling payloads as heavy as the 4,700 kg GSAT-N2 satellite. India’s own launch vehicle, LVM-3, also has payload restrictions, accommodating up to 4,000 kg. Consequently, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket was chosen as the preferred option for this mission, offering a cost-effective and capable launch solution.

The successful launch of GSAT-N2 by SpaceX highlights an evolving trend of international collaboration in the space industry.
