Cold wave: 134 flights are delayed due to dense fog Delhi
As a dense layer of fog continued to cover the nation’s capital, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport saw at least 134 delays, leaving nearly zero visibility on Thursday.
According to Indian Railways, fog and poor visibility also caused delays for twenty-two trains.
The minimum temperature dropped to 6 degrees Celsius, making it almost impossible to see anything on the roads.
There has also been an impact on traffic in Delhi and the adjoining National Capital Region (NCR).

Why is this story important?
North India is currently experiencing a cold wave, which has left regions like Punjab, Haryana, and the Delhi-NCR area foggy and frigid.
The northern region is covered in layers of fog, which has affected commuting, according to satellite pictures previously issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
On the Agra-Lucknow Motorway on Wednesday, a collision involving six vehicles caused by fog resulted in one fatality and 24 injuries.
On Wednesday, nine aircraft from Delhi’s IGI Airport were also rerouted.

IMD issues a dense fog advisory.
The IMD issued a dense fog advisory for Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, North Rajasthan, and North Madhya Pradesh in addition to Delhi-NCR.
“Use caution when operating a vehicle or going on an excursion. Put on fog lights when you’re driving. For information on your travel schedule, get in contact with state transportation, railroads, and airlines,” it stated.
Furthermore, it is forecast that Delhi would be covered in “dense to very dense” fog, with no break in the fog expected till Friday.

Winter break was declared and school hours were adjusted in UP
As the temperature dropped in the north, the Uttar Pradesh government announced Thursday and Friday off for schools in a number of its cities.
The school hours for Classes 1 through 8 in Ghaziabad were changed from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, and Jalaun schools also underwent similar changes.
All schools in Mathura and Aligarh are closed through Friday and Sunday, respectively.
A 15-day winter break has been declared by the Uttar Pradesh government, and it will run from December 31, 2023, to January 14, 2024.
