Speaking to the media following her removal in the “cash-for-query” affair, Moitra declared that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was about to face its demise.
Opposition Members of Parliament staged a walkout after a motion to remove Moitra was adopted by the Lok Sabha.
Why is this story important?
The cash-for-query controversy arose from allegations made by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey that Moitra accepted money from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for Moitra’s asking questions of PM Narendra Modi and the Adani Group in Parliament.
Based on materials provided by Moitra’s former partner and Supreme Court attorney Jai Anant Dehadrai, Dubey filed a complaint.
On Friday, Moitra was dismissed, two months after Dubey’s complaint was submitted.
After the Lok Sabha’s expulsion, Moitra criticizes the BJP-led Centre and Adani.
Moreover, the ousted TMC MP asserted that by keeping quiet, the Modi government wouldn’t be able to get away with the Adani issue.
“Let me tell you this kangaroo court has only shown to all of India that the haste and the abuse of due process you have used demonstrates how important Adani is to you,” she said.
Mamata responds to Moitra leaving.
Following Moitra’s dismissal, Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal and leader of the TMC, accused the BJP of engaging in “vendetta politics” and referred to it as a “attack on democracy.”
“I am sorry to see the BJP party’s current attitude. She questioned, “How could they violate democracy? She is a victim of the situation, I am telling you. “I vehemently denounce it,” the TMC head continued.
Ten MPs were dismissed in 2005: Motion to expels Moitra was moved by Pralhad Joshi, BJP Leader and Parliamentary Affairs Minister. Joshi stated, “During the UPA government, a report was presented and 10 Lok Sabha members were expelled on the same day.”
“Moitra admitted accepting gifts like scarves and lipsticks from Hiranandani,” he stated.
Moitra refuted claims.
While Moitra has consistently refuted the accusations made against her in the cash-for-query issue, the TMC chief acknowledged providing Hiranandani with her parliamentary login ID.
The TMC leader also refuted the rumors that the billionaire gave her expensive presents and cash.
The only presents Moitra received from him, she clarified, were “one scarf, one lipstick, and one eye shadow.”
