Benchmark NSE Nifty closed 156.1 points down at 24680.9 amid selling in frontline bluechip counters.
However, stocks such as Stampede Cap, Future Consumer, Supreme Holdings, Supreme Engineering and Reliance Comm, touched their fresh 52-week lows.
Overall, 16 shares ended in the green in Nifty50 index, while 34 closed in the red.
In the Nifty 50 index, Shriram Finance, Cipla, Hero MotoCorp, HUL and Asian Paints were among top gainers during the day, while Kotak Bank, Bajaj Finance, Wipro, IndusInd Bank and Bharti Airtel ended in the red.
The BSE Sensex closed 572.07 points down at 80891.02. Traders piled up positions in IT Enabled Services, General, Tourism & Hospitality, Apparels and Engineering sectors, while selling was witnessed in Auto Ancillaries, Aquaculture, Packaging, Media & Entertainment and Construction sectors during the day.
